Check Out This Short Story: Christmas in the Barn! The Kids Will Love It!

Good Evening All,

Well, things have slowed down just a little bit and I have some time here at home so I thought I needed to crank up the creative juices and get them flowing. While "junkin" the other day, I ran across this old Scholastic book published in 1968... magic year for me since that's when I entered this world... nevertheless, I have enjoyed reading all of the short Christmas stories, and I chose this one to design seven teaching and learning activities. I hope you all enjoy!

Product Description: This resource is perfect for the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Enclosed you will find five pages of a short narrative story that has a certain rhyme and rhythm to it that students will enjoy! It is a story told from a young girl’s point of view about how she wishes for a horse for Christmas. She is reminded in the story that she will still have a great Christmas even if she doesn’t get a horse; however, she is convinced that one secretly hides in the barn for her. Her mom reminds her about many other children whose parents might very well be away for Christmas. This is a very old Christmas story and was published through Scholastic in 1968. Again, the students will love many teaching and learning activities associated with the story! This story lends itself to several teaching and learning endeavors such as: (1) the use of personification; (2) great vocabulary instruction; (3) sequencing; (4) point of view; (5) Descriptive Writing; (6) research and investigation of several different states discussed in the story; (7) the use of similes to make comparisons; and (8) making predictions about what will happen next in the story based on the context clues provided!

Where Shall We Buy Our Christmas Lights?

Good Evening,

I have been thoroughly enjoying my Thanksgiving holiday at the beach house-- isn't great to just be able to relax and enjoy life! While here, I have enjoyed just getting to create a resource that I hope will be able to help you all during these next three weeks work on opinion/persuasive writing with your students! Check out this resource and let me know what you think?

Product DescriptionYou surely do not want to miss this resource! This packet is 32 pages long and focuses on argumentative/persuasive writing. The students conduct research on the different types of Christmas lights and how to “elegantly” decorate their tree using the appropriate lights. After conducting research and reading articles which are provided including the source, the students develop a “hook” statement that will allow the readers to want to read more to determine the best decision to make in terms of buying and decorating with the proper Christmas lights. Next, after developing the “hook” statement, students utilize a graphic organizer that is provided, and develop their claim and actually state it. The next part of the graphic organizer allows the students to state three reasons why their claims is the best decision to make. As well, after stating and writing each particular reason, there is also a space on the graphic organizer for students to write their evidence in the form of a sentence that supports their specific reason for the claim. Finally, at the end of the graphic organizer, the students are to provide a concluding sentence for their claim. Students will enjoy this particular activity so much during the holiday season; you can’t go wrong with this teaching and learning activity!

Literacy Activity
Nov 13 ~ Numbers
Picture books aid students in visualizing mathematics within a narrative context. (from the Picture Book Month Teacher’s Guide: Why Picture Book Belong in Our Classrooms by Marcie Colleen, 2013).
Did you ever think of a number as being an important part of a story? Take the three little pigs, as an example. How would the story be different if there were six pigs? Or only two? Or what if Snow White stumbled upon a house of twenty dwarves? Change up the numbers in your favorite stories and see how it all adds up to creative writing fun!

It has been my food of choice for quite some time now! So, I decided to write an informational article to engage students in the history of popsicle-making! Check out this resource!

Product DescriptionYour students will enjoy this informational text article all throughout the spring and on into summer enrichment classes. This is an informational text article that is approximately 750-850 words long. It is the story of how the popsicle was created actually by accident. The article is complete with illustrations and captions as well. At the conclusion of the article, there is a ten question formative quiz with questions ranging from vocabulary, main idea, author's point of view, sequencing, inferring, and predicting. There are also performance- based questions as well! Your students will delight in knowing more about this summer treat that everyone enjoys!

Happy Saturday! And the Sun is Shining!

Good Afternoon,

After reading my news feed on Facebook and seeing all of the awesome baseball pictures, I uploaded a Tier One Behavior Reward system to reward good behavior and being nice to classmates. Check out this resource!

Product Description: Springtime is here! Everybody is gearing up for baseball and softball season! And… what student doesn't want to be complimented on his/her great traits or a job well done. Use this resource packet of numbered baseballs to place on a large glove when a student does a great job or compliments another student for a job well done! This resource set includes baseballs numbered from one to forty-eight as well as twelve baseballs that are not numbered that can be used multiple ways. Set up a system with your classroom that when students earn a certain amount of baseballs or a certain amount of points, they are rewarded as a class! This can be a great system to encourage family and community in your classroom!
